Life is about using the whole box of crayons….Joyce Shelton

I paint impressionistic landscapes that explores the concept of life and time. I am drawn to landscapes because they hold the history of our earth. Each rock, mountain, leaf, and drop of water contains eons of history. Old worn down barns and buildings and rotting wood is proof of time and natures ability to take over. Since childhood growing up in rural Pennsylvania I have spent 30 plus years using art as a way to express my love and fascination with the physical beauty of nature.

As an painter I am attracted to texture, color and light. The interplay of these elements creates a dynamic that mimics a symphony. Each element supports, highlights and responds to each other which creates a system that is alive and moving.  Using a contemporary impressionistic approach I find that I can convey the passage of time and the subtle but constant changes that we find in nature. Thick impasto paint allows the tangible feeling of each subject I paint. The artwork is felt both in a deeply spiritual and physical way.

Living in a rural area in upstate New York, I am able to explore untouched natural areas as I did in my childhood. Most days you can find me by a creek or on a hill with my two children. Here I am able to compose, sketch and study my surroundings. As I take my children on our adventures, I am content knowing that I have given them the same love and appreciation that I have. It is a gift to be able to reconnect to the Earth.

I am currently represented by Vines of New Work Art Gallery in Geneva, NY
